About Us

For decades now our built environment has been ordered around cars with every other road user treated as an afterthought.

Many of our roads are overly wide and encourage driver speeds well above the posted speed limit, crosswalks are not designed to protect pedestrians, sidewalks often do not get the same level of maintenance as roads if they exist at all, transit stops lack shade and cover from the rain, and cyclists have few if any spaces that are protected from cars. All of this leads to sprawling development that forces everyone to sit in traffic everywhere they go.

This needs to change.

Bergen County Complete Streets was started by two cyclists and frequent pedestrians living in Fort Lee (Chris) and Wood Ridge (Pat). We became alarmed at the unacceptable number of people getting injured and killed on our roads due to the all-pervading dangerous conditions and decided to do something about it.

We are pushing for broad policy changes at the municipal and county levels across Bergen County. We also work with other transit and street safety groups across NJ and NY to improve mobility options regionally.

No matter your preferred mode of transportation, everyone benefits when streets are designed to be safe and welcoming for all users. Please consider joining us in making Bergen County a happier and healthier community.
